There are lots of great craft beer cities across America, but Colorado is the one state that can boast more awesome craft beer cities and towns than any other. (It s also the only state to have a former craft brewer for its governor!) Right now, there are more than 170 working breweries in Colorado, with an estimated 50 more in development. And the growth doesn t look like it s slowing. There s a craft beer fever spreading across the entire state! Denver and Fort Collins have long been the hubs of the state s craft beer scene, but they are now being rivaled by Boulder, Colorado Springs, Breckenridge, Longmont/Lyons, and up-and-comers like Aurora, Greeley, Ridgway, and Poncha Springs. Breweries in all these places are doing exciting things by re-interpreting classic styles, experimenting with flavors and yeasts, and developing innovative ways to manufacture, package, and reduce their impact on the environment. Colorado brewers all over the state share a distinct passion for creativity, a true dedication to craft, and a boundless energy. This book is a tribute to their outstanding work.

Farmhouse Rusé Release / 5pm
Trinity Brewing / 1466 Garden of the Gods Rd W #184

Farmhouse Rusé.
This cold weather Saison is inspired by a beer from our friends at Black Fox Brewing Company. Consistent in theme this midnight black Belgian is created from a grist bill which includes roast, debittered-black, and chocolate . Maintaining our mission to utilize local sources we will be using a blend of Anaheim and Pueblo chilies from Mauro Farms in Pueblo, Co.; and tree ripened Bartlett pears from Pear Blossom Farms in Palisade, Co... Combined with cacao nibs this special winter warmer recipe showcases light fruit, a balanced and spicy heat, and a provocative dark chocolate bitterness. 9.2%ABV

Also, Ugly sweater night!  Dig out your most hideous sweater and sport it at the pub.

Whiskey Barrel Aged Chilly Water Baltic Porter release / 5pm
Trinity Brewing / 1466 Garden of the Gods Rd W #184

Chilly Water Baltic Porter
Not a common style of beer by any means, in fact this style of Porter is a Bottom fermented lager rather than an ale. Traditionally brewed in Northern Europe, this lager had to be strong to keep all the hearty northern souls warm. Again keep in mind this beer is brewed by Trinity and any beer we make will always have an added twist. The twist in this winter seasonal is the choice to age the beer on some rare Mexican wood known as Cauchalalate. This wood imparts a certain dryness accompanied by deep chocolate and coffee flavors. We think this unique wood is the perfect match for the style, and we know you will agree! 8.5%ABV

Breckenridge Beer Dinner this Saturday at Brewer's Republic

Breckenridge Brewery has a pretty awesome looking beer dinner coming up this weekend in Colorado Springs, the menu was just released and it looks great. This whole week is jam-packed with all sorts of beer events across the Pikes Peak Region, so if you find yourself wanting to hang out in the downtown area, I'd give this dinner a big recommendation. Breck will have two really special beers available including a Barrel Aged Summerbright, which is usually a pretty easy drinking wheat beer, and they'll have a firkin of their Oatmeal Stout with the added goodness of chocolate and coffee. They'll also have seasonals and other great favorites.

The dinner is at Brewer's Republic on Saturday, Sept. 21st. Tickets are $35 and include 5 courses with 5 beers. Tickets are available at Brewer's Republic and at Coaltrain, you must pick them up in advance if you want a spot. Here's the menu:

More Reasons Why Brewer's Republic is Kicking Ass

From @brewersrepublic on Instagram
Brewer's Republic just celebrated their third anniversary. A fair amount has changed at the bar in those three years, but at the same time, not a whole lot has changed. They're still the same great bar for drinking great beer and meeting friends.

Over the weekend this downtown Colorado Springs bar revealed a couple things that will certainly cement them as a craft beer destination for people all over the state of Colorado. For starters, Brewer's Republic has now opened 8 additional taplines, bringing their beer list to a whopping 20 taps. Twelve taps were certainly a good amount for bringing an excellent selection to the city, and for surprising the beer geeks with a good assortment of craft beer. Below, Josh answers some questions about what these extra eight taps will do for the bar.

Additionally Brewer's Republic is one of the first recipients of beers from the brand-new distribution company called Crooked Stave Artisans. The company is a subsidiary of Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project and is in the business of distributing boutique Belgian and Belgian-style beers from around the map back to the Front Range. It's a pretty amazing sounding company.

The first beers will be delivered this week and will be available at Brewer's Republic Friday, Sept. 6 for a very special event. The beers include: Stillwater Artisinal Ales: Stateside Saison, Existent, Cellar Door, As Follows; Evil Twin Brewing from Denmark: Yin, Yang, Ryan and the Beaster Bunny, Molotov Cocktail, Low Life, and Lil B; and there will be one case of Tilquin Questche-Plum Lambic. That should be killer.

Brewer's Republic celebrates third anniversary party!

Remember when Brewer's Republic opened up in the mornings as a coffee bar? Remember when they sent customers to tour hop farms and the Oskar Blues brewery?

We dig that little bar in downtown Colorado Springs. Brewer's Republic is the place where the majority of the Focus on the Beer crew got to know each other. We met on one fateful night, drank a few pints while chatting, and began hanging out quite regularly. Since then we've made friends with so many other people in Colorado Springs and Brewer's Republic has been one of the main places where those friendships grow. It's also the place where a large number of those friendships started. We've had the pleasure of working with BR on a number of our events, we've seen them change ownership, we've attended lovely beer dinners, and we're currently seeing visible progression of an expanded beer selection. We're happy to have Brewer's Republic around, it's one of the best places for grabbing a good craft beer in Colorado Springs. We're looking forward to celebrating their third anniversary this weekend.

Three great events at Brewer's Republic over the next 2 weeks

Brewer's Republic has a few really notable events coming up in the next couple weeks that I think any-a-beer-lover would be interested in hitting up. The events include tap-takeovers and specialty beers from Stone, Great Divide, and Dogfish Head. Check it out!

June 23, 2013

Great Divide dinner at Brewer's Republic will have some specialty brews

On Saturday, June 29th, Brewer's Republic has a really fantastic looking beer dinner and I wanted to make sure it was on your radar. Check out the menu below. The pairings look awesome, the one that looks really fantastic is the Fluffy Kitty Meow Meow IPA with Orange and Jicama salad. The beer, which has the best name for a beer that I've ever heard of, is a limited run beer, and if I had to guess, it's probably a super-citrusy flavor bomb of an IPA. And then an Oatmeal Raisin Yeti? What a treat. We give high recommendations for this dinner.

Tickets are only $35 for 5 courses. Make reservations by stopping in at Brewer's Republic at 112 N. Nevada, Colorado Springs or call them at  719.633.2105

First course:
Great Divide Nomad Pilsner with Cream, Tequila, and Cactus soup with hominy and cilantro, and finished with jullienned radish topper.

Second course:
Great Divide Rumble with Deep fried Avocado in a cumin beer batter served with a cilantro sour cream dipping sauce.

Third course:
Great Divide Fluffy Kitty Meow Meow IPA with Orange and Jicama salad- fresh oranges with Jicama in a ground chile, tossed in vinaigrette and finished with fresh scallions.

Fourth course:
Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale with Sliced Skirt Steak marinated in a roasted tomato and garlic sauce, grilled to perfection with a roasted pepper and red onion tapenade drizzled in a chipotle cream sauce served with a roasted garlic and poblano pepper mashed potato

Fifth course:
Great Divide Oatmeal Raisin Yeti with Chile infused dark chocolate bark with bacon, marshmallows and salted peanuts.

Deschutes Tap Takeover at Brewer's Republic on May 17th

Deschutes Brewery Tap Takeover

Fri. May 17th / 5pm
Brewer's Republic / 112 N. Nevada, Colorado Springs
Facebook Event

Seeing as how the director of Focus on the Beer is from Oregon, we figured our first "tourist tap takeover" at Brewer's Republic should be from an Oregon Brewery. In the past, Brewer's Republic has dedicated one tap handle to an outside-of-Colorado brewery and through our partnership with them we're hoping to do this on a monthly basis. On Friday, May 17th, you will be treated to one of our favorite breweries. Deschutes Brewery is located in Bend, Oregon, with an annex brewpub in Portland. Opening in 1988, the brewery has not only become a classic in the Pacific NW, its beers are still regarded as some of the best in the industry by geeks and professionals alike.

Crooked Stave Tap Takeover: April 26th

Crooked Stave Tap Takeover
At Brewer's Republic
Fri. April 26th / 5pm-close
Facebook Event

Brewer's Republic has teamed up with Focus on the Beer to bring you another lovely Tap Takeover. This one comes from our wild wild friends up in Denver, Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project. Crooked Stave specializes in beers with wild yeast strains and barrel aging. We'll have six beers on tap, two of them are from Crooked Stave's currently-most-popular line and the other four are specialty one-off beers that you won't want to miss! We will also have Kyle Krebsbach, the Crooked Stave representative to answer all your questions about wild yeast, Brettanomyces, barrel aging, the brewery's plans and more.

The Beers:
  • Vieille Artisanal Saison - A 4.2% farmhouse saison with a touch of Brett and dry hopped with Citra
  • Surette Provision Saison - A 6.2% provision saison with a tart and vinous character from extended barrel aging
  • Apple Whiskey Barrel Vieille -  The Vieille Saison aged in Leopold Bros. Apple Whiskey Barrels, brining the ABV up to 5%
  • Hop Savant - Pale Ale fermented with 100% Brett to showcase the hops flavor and aroma instead of the bitterness
  • Saint Bretta - Witbier with 100% Brett yeast and Minneola Tangelos
  • Origins Burgundy Sour - A blend of two beers aged in French Oak barrels from 1.5-2 years. An homage to the history of barrel aging.

Brewers Broads Event: The Role of Water in Beer

The new women's beer group Brewers Broads, seems to be picking up a lot of traction quickly. Their event last month sold out quickly and the newest one might be one of the more fascinating events in their four part series. We learned that each month they will have an educational presentation about one of the four ingredients in beer (yeast, water, malt, hops). Last month's Yeast presentation was led by Ken Andrews of Bristol Brewing. This month, Chris Wright the owner and brewer of Pikes Peak Brewing will lead a talk on the importance and effects of water in brewing. Believe it or not water can make a huge difference in the taste and outcome in a beer, and from what I've heard Chris Wright is pretty intense about his water!

There are two events, both will have the same presentation and beers. One will take place at Brewer's Republic and one will take place at Pikes Peak Brewing. I believe these events are first and foremost for women, however, women can bring a male guest if they also pay. Here's the details on tickets and timing:

Monday April 22nd / 6-8pm
At Brewer's Republic / 112 N. Nevada, Colorado Springs
Tickets available at Brewer's Republic and at Coaltrain Wine & Liquor

Wednesday April 24th / 6-8pm
At Pikes Peak Brewing / 1756 Lake Woodmoor Dr., Monument
Tickets available at Pikes Peak Brewing and at Coaltrain Wine & Liquor

Home Brew, Caramelized (Burnt) Sugar & Odell Brewing Company

Please help us re-welcome Justin Carpenter to the Focus on the Beer blog. He wrote an article about a year and a half ago and now we've invited him to write another when we learned that his beer was chosen to be brewed up at Odell Brewing. He'll tell you all about his beer, and we'll give you the details on how you can get some of it!

Yes, this is a beer blog, and yes, we’re going to talk about beer, but first, we have to head back in time about 80 years, to a quiet town in Kansas, to the tranquil home of Walt and Gertrude Zscheile (shī´ lē). Every Sunday, true to family tradition and recipes brought over through Ellis Island, Walt and Gertrude would milk their Jersey cow and make two batches of ice cream for themselves and their four children: one was a regular batch, and one was made with burnt sugar. This burnt sugar recipe was coveted, cherished, and once again passed down through a few more generations. As a child, I salivated at the thought of my mom cooking it on the stove; as an adult, I often made it for myself, and even shared it with close friends.

Start of caramelization

Now for the beer part: I began brewing about five years ago and was focused on learning traditional techniques and styles. As I slowly began to experiment with various hops, yeasts, grains and special ingredients, I was amazed to discover that there is really no end to the uniqueness that a beer can become. Late one night, I literally woke up with a “Eureka!” on the tip of my tongue. I shook my wife awake (much to her chagrin) to explain that I had finally thought of a way to bring family and beer together in my own creation. But how could I do it? I initially planned to attempt some burnt sugar with a brown ale, but the recipe felt like it would become a stuck mash; so I cellared the idea for a few years.

Introducing Brewers Broads - a new women's beer group in town

Brewers Broads is a new women's beer group in town. The group is led by Aly Hartwig, one of the bartenders at Brewer's Republic and she has some big plans for beer-loving ladies. We had a chance to check in with Aly recently, and we asked her about some of the things she's up to, so check out the interview below.

It sounds like the Broads already have four educational events in the works, each to focus on a different ingredient in beer: yeast, water, malt, and hops. The first event is this Monday, March 18th and will be one of a couple local kick-off events for CO Craft Beer Week. The event, at Brewer's Republic at 6pm, will feature a presentation on yeast by Bristol Brewing's Ken Andrews. Tickets are $15 and are nearly sold out. Last I checked there were only five tickets left, all of which were available at Coaltrain Wine and Spirits (719.475.9700).

If you'd like to be a part of this group, email brewersbroads[at]gmail[dot]com.

Let's catch up with Aly, here's our brief interview:

A couple beer tappings tonight in Colorado Springs

As you'll see in a post later today there is some very unfortunate news for the beer scene in Colorado Springs. Luckily there is some really good news too. I decided to keep the posts separate however. So here is some good news concerning a fantastic tap takeover at Brewer's Republic and a special beer at Trinity:

Brewer's Republic
Brewer's Republic has put together an Equinox tap takeover for tonight. Equinox is a fantastic little brewery up in Fort Collins. I remember going there once and they had six different pale ales and IPAs on tap. Interestingly they do not distribute their beer outside of walking distance. They load their kegs up onto a tricycle and distribute them personally within a few mile radius of the brewery. So, the good news is that the folks at Brewer's Republic have worked out a sweet deal with Equinox, went up to fetch the kegs, and will have them on tap tonight. I'd say this is a pretty special tapping.

Here's a list of what they'll have: Night Ryder Dunkel, Locken der Roggenbier, Eclipse Brown Ale, O'Rion Irish Red (2011 GABF Gold Medal Winner), Space Ghost IPA, and Sputnik Imperial Stout.

Trinity Brewing
Tonight at 5pm Trinity Brewing is releasing a whiskey barrel aged version of their Chilly Water Baltic Porter. The beer is already one of my favorites and I can tell that the beer would lend itself well to a whiskey barrel. It's already aged with some special Mexican wood that gives it some nice vanilla and spice notes, this is going to make it even more complex. Head on over there tonight, I imagine this beer won't last long.

Recap: Pikes Peak Tap Takeover and Avery Beer Dinner

In the last week I've had a few memorable beer experiences and I'd like to share them. I'll mention my time at Brewer's Republic here and then at Blue Star below.

Brewer's Republic has been killing it with Josh as the new General Manager. Pretty much every week (often more than once a week) they have special tap takeovers, they've started selling some ridiculously good bottles of beer (Drei Fonteinen Oude Gueuze and others!) and they've even had some really great out-of-state beers on tap. I plan to head there tomorrow or Thursday to get a glass of the North Coast Barrel Aged Rasputin on tap.

New Changes at Brewers Republic and Upcoming Events

If you stepped inside Brewers Republic sometime last week, you may have noticed some subtle changes. There are a couple high top tables replacing the lower ones. A new beer cooler is next to the bar with a few beer bottles. And there is a little less clutter behind the bar. These small changes are the tip of the iceberg according to Josh Adamski, Brewer's Republic's manager. The changes are the result of new ownership. The owners of the adjacent bar, The Underground, recently bought the rights to Brewers Republic from the previous three owners, Jason, Brian, and Dave. We are very grateful for everything the Original 3 have done for downtown Colorado Springs and we wish them the best in their future endeavors. The Underground owners plan to make only a few minor changes and have given Josh some control over what goes on at Brewers. And that's a good thing for the downtown craft beer scene because Josh knows his beer.  He says that Brewers will have some very exciting changes that are already taking place or will happen in the very near future.

Special New Belgium Tapping for Beers Made By Walking

We are very pleased to announce that we were able to secure a keg of New Belgium's Beers Made By Walking beer. We thought this was a good enough reason to celebrate so we have coordinated with Brewer's Republic to tap it later this month.

Last year we invited New Belgium to be a part of our BMBW program. They went on a walk around their property and identified plants in the area. They decided to use lavender and plum in a bock. Not only that, they invited us to come up to Fort Collins and help brew it with them. The beer has only been on tap in their brewery taproom and it was also available during our Anniversary Party. We have one more keg of it and would like to give you all another opportunity to have some.

The beer turned out lovely. It's a 5.5% amber with subtle and delicate malt notes. The lavender is present but not overwhelming in any way and the plum contributes some nice residual sugars for an extra layer of complexity. This may be your last opportunity to try this beer so we hope to see you there.

Brewer's Republic brings River North Brewing to town

A while back we visited River North Brewing up in Denver and were really impressed with all of their beers. The brewery is brand new and already make some good headlines, carving out a place in the heart of Denver beer lovers. Well, Brewer's Republic is bringing their brewer to town and they're going to have a special tapping of four of their beers, with another beer in bottles. This seems like a pretty great event. Just to be clear, it is not related to the Meet the Brewer series that we organize, but it's still going to be good. And it's good to see another place putting on a good event like this. I'd head that way on Sunday.

Brewer's Republic brings River North Brewing to town
Sun. Oct 21st / 5-7pm / 112 N. Nevada, COS.
Come by Brewer's Republic on Sunday October 21st from 5-7 pm to meet Patrick with River North. River North Brewery is located in the River North Art district in the northern part of downtown Denver. We will have four beers available:
Quandry - Belgian Quad
BPR - Belgian Pale Red
River North White - Belgian Wit
Whiskey Barrel Aged River North White
And also one case of Avarice their Belgian Stout.
