Recap: Beers Made By Walking Denver 2013

Last week, during the influx of beer crowds in Denver, we hosted our latest Beers Made By Walking event. The program this year boasted 17 breweries from across the great state of Colorado, each brewer made a beer inspired by nature trails near their brewery. Wynkoop hosted the event this year and we saw a larger crowd than we did last year, with about 200 people total. It's wild that the event is already over! We put so much time and energy into it, perhaps forsaking some of our other duties on the blog here.

Scott Witsoe of Wit's End Brewing had one of the most decorative booths. The herbalist who led his walk down the South Platte River Trail brought in a bouquet of Rabbit Brush. Wit's End's beer was brewed with Rabbit Brush and Rabbit Brush honey. The plant, once you've seen it, you realize that you see it everywhere on the Front Range.

Chris and Sean are starting a new brewery called Cerebral Brewing. I asked Sean to take part and while he doesn't have a brewery up and running, he called up Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew and asked if they'd like to collaborate. They put together a really easy-drinking beer that had roasted sunflower seeds and dandelion. Be on the lookout for Cerebral Brewing in the coming year.

All of the beers were exciting, every beer was tasty, and it was fun to try out ingredients that were really untested and non-traditional. Some surprises included New Belgium's Mint Mild. I wouldn't have thought to put together Mint in a beer with hints of toffee and nuts, usually you would think of it in a lighter beer or perhaps a chocolately stout. The combination was fantastic.

Additionally Boulder Beer Co.'s beer had chokecherry, echinacea, milk thistle, and dandelion. The hope was to make a type of healing beer, and there were many jokes about how you could drink as much of this one as you wanted and not get hungover, and you'd just get healthier. With such a plethora of herbal ingredients, this one turned out very earthy and a lot of fun in a non-traditional way.

These beers, and others including Paradox's Chokecherry Sour, Yak & Yeti's cedar spruce ale, Strange's wild hop, Twisted Pine's nectarine wit, Wynkoop's blue gummy bear beer, Grimm Bro's raspberry infused pils, Pikes Peak and Elevation's currant beers, Mountain Sun's yarrow saison, Fate's conceptual wild wheat, and Phantom Canyon's aged sour rose hip and sumac beer all made the night pretty magical in our books!

We would like to thank every brewer that was a part of the program this year. We know that Colorado breweries are tasked with ramping up production to meet the needs of the GABF crowds, so we always love when a brewer decides that they'll take some time out, go for a walk, and clear some head space for a new brew. The breweries that were a part of this event are: Boulder Beer, Crooked Stave, Elevation, Fate, Grimm Brothers, Mountain Sun Pub, New Belgium, Our Mutual Friend with Cerebral Brewing, Paradox, Phantom Canyon, Pikes Peak, Strange, Three Barrel, Twisted Pine, Wit's End, Wynkoop, and Yak & Yeti.

If you want to keep up to date on all things Beers Made By Walking, please check us out on FB, and you can get BMBW email updates too.

Cheers!

Sneak Peek #05 - Fate, Our Mutual Friend, and Cerebral - a few of Colorado's newest breweries

For our final sneak preview of this Tuesday's Beers Made By Walking event we wanted to show you how some of Colorado's newest breweries are creating beer that is inspired by their local scenery. Fate Brewing and Our Mutual Friend are only one year old, give or take a month or two, and are among the youngest breweries to be a part of this program. Cerebral Brewing isn't even an official brewery yet, but they worked with the crew at Our Mutual Friend to create a collaborative beer. Let's take a look at their hikes, and how the landscape influenced the beers that they made.

Sneak Peek #04 - Urban Walks with Wynkoop and Mountain Sun

Over the last few days we've given you a few special sneak peeks of the beers you'll see at the October 8th tapping at Wynkoop in Denver. Each of the beers in this program have been created after going on nature hikes, learning about the plants along the trail, and then using those plants as inspiration for a brew. Next week, seventeen breweries from around the state will showcase their beer at our special event. For today's sneak peek though, we wanted to show you how the breweries in the big city tackle the Beers Made By Walking challenge. Today we'll show you two breweries from Denver; they decided to take urban walks and they've taken some artistic license with their beers. Check out the updates we've received from Wynkoop Brewing and Mountain Sun (Vine Street).

Beers Made By Walking Sneak Peek #03 - New Belgium Brewing

The third in our series of sneak peeks for the upcoming Beers Made By Walking tapping comes from New Beglium Brewing in Fort Collins. New Belgium is no stranger to the BMBW program, nor are they strangers to using non-traditional ingredients in beer. Just recently they released a Cocunut Curry Hefeweizen and a slightly tart beer with Yuzu fruit. Last year New Belgium participated in Beers Made By Walking by creating a Bock and adding a house-made lavendar tea and plums. It was a delicious beer and we're really looking forward to seeing what they have in store this year. Let's find out what kind of beer we can expect from them for the special October 8th tapping in Denver.

Beers Made By Walking - Sneak Peek #02 with Elevation Beer Co.

Continuing our behind-the-scenes series of the beers you will try at the coming Beers Made By Walking festival in Denver, our next preview comes from Elevation Beer Co. Their beer, along with 16 others, have gained their inspiration from the Rocky Mountain landscape and will be available for one night only on October 8th at Wynkoop Brewing in Denver.

Elevation is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, in Poncha Springs, just a few minutes from the town of Salida, and a short drive to some excellent skiing at Monarch Mountain. The brewery boasts one of the highest altitude brewing facilities in the world, sitting at around 7,465 feet above sea level. They are also a relatively new brewery, having started their operation in March of 2012. Elevation was eager to be a part of Beers Made By Walking when they heard about it because their brewery team thoroughly enjoys hiking trails and outdoor mountain activities.

Beers Made By Walking - Sneak Peek #01 with Boulder Beer Co.

With the Beers Made By Walking festival coming up in Denver on October 10th, we thought we would create a few behind-the-scenes previews of the beers you can expect to taste. Throughout the summer, seventeen Colorado breweries have joined our program. They have each gone on a nature hike, or urban walk, and gained inspiration from the landscape. Each brewery identifies edible and medicinal plants along the way and creates a beer that showcases what they saw on the trail. These seventeen beers will all be on tap, for one night only, at Wynkoop Brewing. Today we are introducing our first sneak peek. We'll tell you all about the hike that Boulder Beer Co. took, and what kind of beer they are creating for October 10th.

The Boulder Beer Co. crew decided that they would hike in Boulder's famous and remarkable Chautauqua Park. The hike would lead them to a surprising 50+ variety of plants that ranged from wild plums to mullein. They even surprised a black bear at one point on the trail. The three-hour journey began at the ranger cottage, and took a series of trails that led them across the green to the Bluebell Shelter and Gregory Canyon. Almost immediately leaving the cottage the team discovered an echinacea plant. The plant has traditionally been used to help fight colds and cold symptoms.

Oregon Beer Scene meets Colorado Beer

I spent the past month in Portland, Oregon because, in addition to visiting friends and family, I had organized a number of events that brought some of what Focus on the Beer is all about to the Pacific NW. As you know, our wonderful state of Colorado is home to well over 150 breweries, so I worked with about ten to bring their beer to a special event during Portland Beer Week. In addition to that I also organized a couple Beers Made By Walking walks and a BMBW tapping. I'd like to share some of the photos from these experiences. Many of our Pikes Peak Region readers have been a part of our BMBW walks, or you have attended some of our events, so you know what fun they can be. It felt really special to be able to do some of these things in a city that has such a huge influence in the beer industry.

Portland Beer Week is not really a beer week, it's an entire ten days of impressive beer programming. From the Portland Fruit Beer Fest, which challenges people to think very differently about fruit beer, to the Wine and Cheese Fest, to the barrel age beer seminar, the entire thing is one of the more serious educational beer programs I've ever seen.

Beers Made By Walking in Oregon for Portland Beer Week

Even though Focus on the Beer is a Colorado-forward blog we do mention Oregon quite a bit. The reason is because I'm originally from Oregon and I've been organizing beer events there since 2008. It's been fun tying the events together more and more through this blog and I hope our readers don't mind!

Beers Made By Walking will have two special events for PDX Beer Week. On June 12th we will have a public hike in Forest Park and on June 13th we will tap four beers from Breakside, Coalition, Hopworks, and Gigantic inspired by a trail in Forest Park. Details are below:

Special New Belgium Tapping for Beers Made By Walking

We are very pleased to announce that we were able to secure a keg of New Belgium's Beers Made By Walking beer. We thought this was a good enough reason to celebrate so we have coordinated with Brewer's Republic to tap it later this month.

Last year we invited New Belgium to be a part of our BMBW program. They went on a walk around their property and identified plants in the area. They decided to use lavender and plum in a bock. Not only that, they invited us to come up to Fort Collins and help brew it with them. The beer has only been on tap in their brewery taproom and it was also available during our Anniversary Party. We have one more keg of it and would like to give you all another opportunity to have some.

The beer turned out lovely. It's a 5.5% amber with subtle and delicate malt notes. The lavender is present but not overwhelming in any way and the plum contributes some nice residual sugars for an extra layer of complexity. This may be your last opportunity to try this beer so we hope to see you there.

Beers Made By Walking will serve three beers this weekend during Wynkoop's big party!

This Saturday, we have been invited to serve up three of our Beers Made By Walking beers from this summer at Wynkoop during their annual Beers of the Year event! What a real honor! The event runs from 1-4pm on Nov. 3. All the information is below, including info on the three BMBW beers:

Attendees can sample every beer Wynkoop brewed this year and special cask, reserve and vintage Wynkoop beers. Along with beers from fave peers (Breckenridge Brewery, Fort Collins Brewery, Mountain Sun Breweries & Pubs, and Beers Made By Walking) and a selection of gourmet cheeses to accompany the array of 50 beers.

We will be serving three beers from our Beers Made by Walking stash! This will include Ska's Cerveza de las Animas Perdidas (chokecherry, juniper, and yarrow Saison), Strange's Eldorado Bel-Gin Dark (Belgian dark with juniper and pineapple weed), and a beer we saved just for this event...the never before seen Wynkoop Green Cross (American Pale Ale with dank hops, hemp seeds, and magic).

Wynkoop will be releasing a pair of out-there new beers at this year's Beers of the Year. Belgian Pear Cider (8.2% ABV) is built from a trippel recipe and fermented with Colorado pear juice. The Chancellor is a single malt/single hop super-strong ale (14% ABV) made from a 1930 Oxford University recipe provided by UK beer historian Terry Foster. It has been barrel aging for 16 months.

Beer nuts can buy advance $25 Beers of the Year tickets and see the current beer list at www.wynkoop.com. Tix are $32 at the door the day of the show. Advance ticket buyers are entered into a drawing for a pair of tickets to Wynkoop's Dec. 1 Parade of Darks.

The Party At and Around GABF

Everyone knows that the Great American Beer Festival is a giant beer party. Hundreds of breweries around the country bring in their mainline beers and some of their best offerings for the big show. The event is amazing, you enter the convention center with tens of thousands of people as bagpipes overwhelm you with a wall of sound. People rush to the booths where the rarest beers will disappear quickly and then they set off to try beers that they can only get while at GABF. The brewers too come with excitement as they hope to snag a coveted GABF award (Huge congrats to Trinity for their Bronze in the American Brett Ale category!). While most don't win anything, I imagine no one goes home truly upset, it's practically impossible to leave GABF without a sense that you've just had the best few days of your life. Plus your liver is hurting and you spend one day recuperating, and that's also one of the best days ever.

But there's much more to GABF than meets the eye. There are literally a hundred-plus events happening around Denver that supplement the festivities. Some of them are rare beer tappings, or beers that aren't normally available to Colorado and other markets. Some are fundraisers, some are big cook-outs, some you can meet the brewers, etc. etc. etc. We went to a number of these events. In many ways we enjoyed these as much as the big event itself because they were slightly quieter and slower and that's just what we needed. So this post really is a look at the party Around GABF rather than a look At GABF.

Photo Recap: Denver Beers Made By Walking

Tuesday night was the debut of Beers Made By Walking in Denver. We've been pretty excited about this event as we worked with nine of our favorite Colorado Breweries to create special beers just for the event. We were pleased to have a packed house, our friends from Denver Off The Wagon showed up, a few pals from Colorado Springs, as did a few other people we've met along the way. You can read more about the event on Denver's Westword and the Denver Post. The Westword called the event one of the most unusual event of GABF week. We really like that description!

News from New Belgium about this Tuesday's BMBW

Unfortunately New Belgium will not have a beer ready for Tuesday's event in Denver. They are pretty bummed about it but have released a statement for us:

For the fine fans of Beers Made by Walking.
When New Belgium started discussions with Beers Made by Walking to brew a beer for their big ol’ party during GABF it was contingent on our new pilot brewing system being complete. Come brew day for our Beer Made by Walking the system was not complete. We are sorry for this, but big projects (like building a pilot system) sometimes take longer than their original timeline. Everyone new it was going to be close, and it was looking like it was going to happen, and then it didn’t. Again, we’re sorry that we will not be able to get in on the party. However, we still want to brew a beer with BMBW, we are planning that beer now. It will be available and pouring at Focus On the Beer’s anniversary party in December. Sorry about all this, it’s a bummer, I know. Enjoy the party and we will see you in December…
We are thankful that New Belgium has showed a huge interest in what we are doing and we're glad that they still want to make it work for our party. I thought I'd let you all know that.

We do have a backup plan though! Pikes Peak Brewing hosted a local BMBW event just a couple weeks ago and they were able to brew up an extra batch of the Sour-Mash Chokecherry Kriek on their pilot system. We'll be bringing that up as a replacement. Let me tell you right away that this beer is really fantastic and I'm looking forward to trying it again!

Photo Recap: Beers Made By Walking 2012 Tasting (COS/Monument)

Colorado Springs' second annual Beers Made By Walking wrapped up last weekend. It's an event that we organize during the summer. We invite brewers onto nature walks in the Pikes Peak Region and then we make beer inspired by the edible and medicinal plants we find on the trails. This year we commissioned eight beers, they were brewed at Pikes Peak Brewing and all the local beer and nature lovers came out and celebrated.

Upon arrival, visitors were treated to a twenty page catalog/menu that talked about our hike up to Palmer Lake Reservoir and it had bios of each brewer with information on the conceptual development and decision-making that went into each beer. We served four beers at a time on hand-made serving trays that were made of local beetle-kill pine.

Sneak Peek #4 - Beers Made By Walking (Monument/Colorado Springs)

Our final sneak peek at tomorrow's Beers Made By Walking is here. We'll give you one last look at some of the beers that will be available tomorrow, and tomorrow only. I hope to see you all there! Pikes Peak Brewing in Monument at 3pm.

John Landreman
3 leaf sumac with berries
What kind of beer are you making and what are some of the ingredients that you are using?
I'm making a Saison with rose hips and sumac. Saison is a Belgian ale that often use local, seasonal ingredients. The rose hips and sumac are added near the end of the boil to add their flavor and aroma to the beer. Rose hips add a fruity flavor, somewhat like a cranberry. Sumac have tart, lemony flavor.

On the hike, what ingredients stood out and how did you make your decisions?
First of all, there were an amazing number of possible ingredients. One that was interesting, and that I had never heard of before, was Pin Cherries. They're a small cherry with a tart, apple like, flavor. I would have liked to use them but I didn't think I would have been able get enough for my batch. Since it's common with Saisons to use local, seasonal ingredients. I thought it made it a good choice to show off flavors from the hike. Rose hips and sumac are two ingredients with fairly delicate flavors that should complement the Saison's own fruity and spicy character.

I thought a lot of the ingredients would work well in a Brown Ale. The Brown Ale has enough flavor to stand up to some of the stronger additional flavors. However, I really enjoy Saisons and I thought this was a great opportunity to use local flavors in one.

Sneak Peek #3 - Beers Made By Walking (Monument/COS)

Beers Made By Walking is this Saturday! If we haven't given you enough reason to  head up to Pikes Peak Brewing for this unique event we thought we'd share a little bit about two more of the beers that have been made exclusively for Saturday! As a reminder, the event is Saturday from 3-6pm and for $10 you get unlimited samples of the eight beers! Here's an interview with Scott Werner and Mike Bordick, both these guys have created some pretty special brews:

Scott Werner
Three Leaf Sumac
Beer Name: Gose of Summer's Past

What kind of beer are you making and what are some of the ingredients that you are using?

German Gose, an older style that was briefly extinct but has seen a bit of a resurgence both in it original location (Goslar and Leipzeig, Germany) as well as with several US craft brewers including Portland's Cascade brewing (who do 4 different seasonal Gose brews) and a couple of local Colorado breweries (golden city and great divide).

My beer has a typical malt bill of wheat, pilsner, unmalted wheat and flaked oats along with typical ingredients of salt and coriander but also includes several nontraditional ingredients - white truffle salt, bee balm, and ground sumac.
